I am going to Serbia, 17.-25.5.2008

I am going to Serbia in May 17-26th, just before and during Eurovision Song Contest in Beograd.
I will visit many local legal FM-stations (at least 10 stations) in Beograd and in smaller cities around with my DX-friend (Jim from Espoo), so, the target will be radio 24h, FM- and pirate-radio.

We hope that we can be on the air on some bigger MW-pirate radio from Serbia on some late evening. It could be interesting to try to reach Europe from Serbian pirate between 1600 - 1700 kHz!
I will inform here about the possible broadcast from Serbia. It would be fantastic to take GSM-phone-callings and reports from all over Europe during the brodcast !
The happenings in Serbia does not look good just now. I hope everything will go better - we have already booked the flights!!

QSLs from Volos, Central Greece

Here are my first real QSL-cards from Greek Medium Wave-pirates.

They are Radio Xenos and Radio 98 from Volos, Central Greece - both around 1720 kHz and approx. 1 kW power.

My first Greek MW-QSL is
Radio Ouranio Toxo from Larissa.
It is a verification-letter written to me when I visited that station in October 2006.

MY QSL LOOKS LIKE THIS !

Weekend 16.-17.2.2008 - Russian pirates!

One highlight of this weekend was a few Russian pirates received on Medium Wave 1640 - 1700 kHz. Also I identified one, Radio Palma, location unknown (confirmed by Russian DXer).

I have noticed before that these stations are audible almost only between 15.00 - 18.00 UTC and always there are many stations up at the same time!!! After 18UTC they start to fade out - and very rarely audible at night. I think the reason for this is the sunset efect. So, it is possible that they come far away from Russia. Russian help needed for more info!!

Russian MW-log Saturday 16.2.2008
1641 kHz - Russian pirate with non-stop-Russian music - 16.37- (O=0-2+)
1652 kHz - Russian pirate. Non-stop + some talking - 16.05- (O=2-3+) mp3
1661 kHz - Russian pirate with non-stop-Russian music - 16.35- (O=0-2)

1700 kHz - Russian pirate. Only non-stop heard -16.30- (O=1-3) mp3

Radio 98 received in Finland on Thursday evening

Radio 98 from Volos, Middle Greece had clear signal in Finland on Thursday evening 14.2. -08 from 20.50 to 21.00 UTC. I heard Greek folk music and talking in English:
"This is Station 98 from Volos, Central Greece. Operator name is Panos" mp3_A / mp3_B / mp3_C
The frequency was 1720 kHz and power of the transmitter was 1 kW.

Radio 98 is my 3rd received pirate from Volos-city.
Last Saturday I received two other stations on 1720 kHz. They were Radio Xenos (temporarily 1,2 kW / mp3) and Radio Pilio (1 kW, 6x 813-tube, 3000 V / mp3).

Radio Xenos and Radio 98 from Volos, Greece test to Finland!

Radio 98 (eneninda okto) from Volos, Greece tested signal to Finland Saturday evening at 19.00 UTC with 1 kW. Frequency was 1750 kHz and later 1720 kHz.
However, it was too early time and the band was not well open - no clear signal here. New test later.

Radio Xenos
received in Finland!!
Radio Xenos from this same city tested at 20.00-20.14 UTC on 1720 kHz. Power was 1,2 kW (max. available 3,5 kW). His signal was poor/fair here in Finland! I heard Greek talking and music - and station-ID in English: mp3_A / mp3_B "This is Radio Xenos from Volos, Greece"
The signal-path here - 2.342 km long (made by Radio Tromokratis. Tnx!)!

After Radio Xenos I heard Radio Pilio (also from Volos) giving signal-report to Xenos. This happened on 1720 kHz at 20.15 UTC. Power also 1 kW. Signal poor/fair. There is clearly "Radio Pilio" said three times (but impossible to ID without Greek help) ! mp3

Volos is a beautiful city by the sea about 160 km North from Athens (60 km South from Larissa).

3) MW-Greeks were strong on Friday evening/night around 1670 kHz, but they are impossible to ID (sample mp3, no id here), or even know where the station-ID might be in QSO-talking sessions!

Log Sunday 13.1.2008

Log Thursday 10.1.2008
On Thursday evening (10.1. 2008) I tuned Dutch pirates on MW since long time. I am not so motivated to listen them here at my home in Naantali because of poor antennas (48mb dipole is the best here).

In our DX-camp (burned down, new building is under construction) I had super-signals with 1 km longwires ! You can listen my Dutch pirate-clips tuned 2 years ago, in January 2006 with 1 km longwire-antenna: "45 in 24uur" (158 mp3-clips!!!).

QSL from Radio Barretina, Cataluna

First time I heard a pirate radio from Spain! This is Radio Barretina (www) from Cataluna, North Spain (first Spanish SW-pirate ever?)! This station has been on the air very often around 6310 kHz 48 mb with 100 W.

Signal was surprisingly good on Friday evening 4th Jan. 2008 on 6311.1 kHz. They relayed local FM-station, Radio l'Arboç (106.8 MHz in L'Arboç del Penedés) that evening. Here mp3-recording: "Roxette en Radio l'Arboç".
I sent a report to Radio Barretina and I got a QSL-reply by e-mail very quickly, within a few hours! Very nice and detailed QSL (number 14). Click the QSL >>>

New photos

There seemed to be many pirates on the air on 23.12.2008 on 48mb but I had time only for quick checks.

I made some updates to my mainpage (http://www.harrikujala.tk/).
One interesting item is a new tx-studio-photo from Radio Tornado, Croatia. This station is still on the air around 1650 kHz with 750 Watts. Click the photo >>>

I have also a photo-series of Adonis AM, Larissa, Greece. New 1-2 kW MW-transmitter is under construction and will be ready by the end of this year.
Adonis AM will test signal to Finland later, perhaps even before year 2008.
I will inform here when there will be a test. Other listeners around Europe can try it, too at the same time. Those tx-building-photos can be seen on my mainpage.

Sat 15.12 - Radio St.Helena 11092.5 kHz

Finally I was at my receiver when Radio St.Helena is on the air (www/ from the islands in South Atlantic Ocean, 6500 people). This station broadcast only 1-2 times per year for several hours on SW. Thank's everybody for reminding me of this broadcast!!
Signal was surprisingly good in whole Scandinavia on 11092.5 kHz (USB-modulation, 1 kW).
I sent e-mail to the station of my reception and it was also read on the air very quickly. They had e-mails from all over Europe, even live phonecallings.

I managed to record the part where my e-mail is mentioned (mp3): "e-mail. Hello from Naantali, SW Finland, North Europe. Surprisingly good signal here in southwest Finland ..."
They do not reply e-mails and I will mail written report to get Double Anniversary QSL (founded 40y ago, 10y on SW)!

(No pirate listening this weekend)

In Dublin, Ireland 5.-10.12.2007

I visited Ireland with my wife. Among sightseeing we visited two legal stations: Midlands 103 in Tullamore (103.5 MHz; main office, www). Nice visit given by PC William Faulkner!! They really have content and talk on Irish local radio. William played only one music title in his show 9.30 - 12.00 on Thursday! Click the photo>>>
Also a short visit to Galway Bay FM, Galway, in westcoast of Ireland (95.8 MHz,
www) on Friday. Everybody was buzy at the station because of outside auction-broadcast from city centre.

On Saturday evening I was also lucky to visit pirate Energy Power AM, Dublin!
These guys really have transmitters and knowledge! Many FM-transmitters was all around. Big surprise was ex-Century Radio 1143 kHz 1 kW-transmitter (Waiting to have a good home!). In the outside cottage there were real classic tx: WKLR's 20 years old 400 W transmitter!! WKLR (West Cork Local Radio, Bandon, www) used this mid 80's on 1503 kHz. This crystal was still on it's place!
Energy Power was on the air on MW on Saturday just because my visit. Nice surprise! Click the photo>>>
They use unique homemade transistor AM-transmitter with 330 W. Nice signal even 20 km away!

Weekend Log 8-9.12.2007 - North Dublin, Ireland
94.15 MHz - Rythm FM, Dublin. Weak. 24h weekend with dance.
94.65 MHz - Dance FM, Dublin. Strong with RDS. On air every day 24h.
99.5 MHz - Chance FM, Dublin. Weak. Oldies format from 60's to 80's. Weekend.
101.3 MHz - Club FM, Dublin. Fairly strong. Weekend dance station.

Three of Dublin's four FM-pirate were dance-stations. Dance FM had silent carrier since Saturday evening and went totally off air on Sunday evening!
These signals were picked up in a hotel (2nd floor) near Dublin airport 10 km away from city centre with Sangean ATS-909 with normal whip-antenna.

I will put some photos online of my visits later!!

QSL from Serbia - Radio Texas, Vrsac

On the 3rd November late evening we made a test with Serbian pirates to reach Finland. I was lucky to hear several Serbians with QSOing each other and to me!!
The best catch was Radio Texas from Vrsac (mp3). He reached me with only 50 W! Here is enclosed a Texas-QSL from this reception in Finland! Click larger photo >>>
I heard also Radio Daleky (1 kW, Majdanpek and Radio Vihor from Pancevo (here mp3 with regards to me in English, 3.11.2007 on 1695 kHz). I received also Radio Balkan (Beograd) and Radio Lovac (Pancevo)(transmitter photo), but with no clear ID (only talk).
