Next HF-Weekend 24-25.3.2012

Thanks for all the stations and listeners participating this global pirate happening on 14-15.1.2012. It was fun again!!

Next HF-Weekend will be 24-25.3.2012! I am sure there will be more stations on the air. Some will have new transmitters and antennas - so it will be very interesting!
I also hope to have more new stations participating this in March, the stations which were now on the air but did not sign in to the list to the blog.

In the future I can list only the frequency of the station, not the name
I suppose many stations are afraid to be raided if they are listed on my blog. So, I had nice suggestion from Rick on this: I give only the frequency (and perhaps the country), not the name of the station (or only in real time) in the future, if needed !!!!

About propagation in the future
I have been informed that F2-layer in ionosphere will give better conditions in spring and autumn (like was in Novermber 2011). So, I expect that in the end of March HF will be open better (forexample Ham-band 28 MHz is NOW almost dead here!!!). So, maximun usable frequency (MUF) is now lower, perhaps moving around 12-22 MHz, and giving very selective receptions to small areas around the world!!

The results of 14-15.1.2012 HF-Weekend
Despite of only a few stations on the air there were nice goals:

- Channel Z was received in Japan as first US-pirate, on 11.428 MHz with 16 Watts !!! Congratulations!!
- Borderhunter (Holland) and Undercover (USA) had transatlatic-QSO on 15.490 MHz. mp3-audio
- Cupid and Borderhunter had nice signals in New Delhi, India by three listeners
- Black Bird reached Japan as the only C-European station
- Baltic Sea and Borderhunter was heard in New Zealand again
- New HF-stations were on the air: Radio Shadow, Fox 48, Alpenroos, WEMP.

However, I expected to have more new listeners from all over the world because there were so many new visitors to the blog. Propagation was not good but the bands were not dead either!

Baltic Sea Radio on Sunday 18950/21500kHz LSB. Youtube - No other stations could be heard in Shimane, JAPAN. Band was not well open to Japan -
However, Radio Black Bird was heard in Japan ! But we must remember that propagation is very selective on HF via F2-layer!! There are big differencies in receptions even in small areas!

TransAtlatic QSO again: Undercover and Borderhunter

Once again there were QSO between European and US-pirate station on 19 mb.

Undercover Radio (USA) and Radio Borderhunter (Holland) gave signal-reports to each other on Sunday 15th January 2012 on 15.490 MHz. Modulation was LSB although both received each other also in AM-mode very well.
Undercover was not scheduled on HF-Weekend but came on the air after Borderhunter's broadcast in the European afternoon.

Here is audio-clip of this QSO! It is recorded in Newfoundland, Canada (Terry?), where both stations were audible!!

Radio Black Bird from Holland activated on SW after long break and participated HF-Weekend. Here is Black Bird's message:

"Hello Harri, I would like to thank you for the fantastic work what you did for the Global Pirate HF-weekend!!
For me it was so much fun to do, also a big thanks to the listeners who send in photo’s, e-mails, audio files and more. Also that so many people where on Iann’s chatroom was great to see!
The Youtube-clip from Globo from Finland was nice to see and to hear how reception was at his station.
In total I received 13 e-mails with reports till now. They came from Finland, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Russia, Ukraine and till my big surprise found this evening a letter from Japan!!!!
Mr. Munetsugu Matsushita from Osaka, Japan heard me on 15.460 from 08:20 till 08:29 with 22211.
This was a big surprise for me, and of course I am very happy with this one.

Next time I will be on also and have some new ideas for antennas.

Radio FOX 48, 1320 UTC, 15.092u. a week signal here this morning. It might be a little early for this freq. here. Could hear music and just occasional speech from the op. Probably about a 20% copy here.
Black Arrow, 1320 UTC, 21.490a, a good to fair signal here. The signal was stable but the noise floor was rising and falling. A real nice copy (with very nice audio) when the floor was low and an almost complete fade when the floor was high. Again a bit later in the day might yield better results. Thanks Black Arrow!
Borderhunter, 15.515 MHz, 1610 utc, just after switch from 15.100. Good signal here on top of variable noise floor signal strength is S6-8. Very good signal at times with outstanding audio quality and playing some great music this morning -Olddxer, OH, USA-

Channel Z (USA)confirms that the signal on the clip is ok. Channel Z was received in Japan with only 16 Watts of power on 11.428 MHz: "Holy crap, you heard Channel Z Radio in Japan! Your Youtube clip has the Japanese ID by a computer generated female voice, followed by the Edgar Winter Group with "Frankenstein". Just incredible! Thank you so much!"

I'd like to remind all pirate stations and listeners around the world that next HF-Weekend will be 14-15.1.2012 !
LIST OF THE STATIONS WILL BE PUBLISHED HERE ON Friday 13.1.2012.

That would be a test-weekend for pirates from all over the world to broadcast on High Frequencies 10 - 28 MHz (mostly on 15-22 MHz) !! Still much time for preparing things.
New station from BULGARIA just joint to broadcast: Free Radio Bulgaria (F.R.B. Service) will be on the air on 21.490 MHz with 100 W. More info later!

So, I hope also pirate stations from USA and Canada will join this weekend trying to reach Europe and also Asia/Oceania !!
I think that the stations should prefere frequencies between 21.450 - 21.550 MHz and 15.000 - 15.100 MHz, but of course anything goes.

There seems to have been visitors to my blog from all over the world. So, let's hope that we will have new listeners from South America and Asia etc. Big antennas and receivers NOT needed for very long skips.

Small Serbian pirate station, Radar Serbia Radio, will have test broadcast to Europe on Saturday 17th December 2011! Station will be on the air from 20.00 - 23.00 UTC !! Frequency is very exceptional: 2023 kHz!! The power is only 40 Watts AM. Music will be rock.
Real challenge to hear !

Radar Serbia Radio is planning to start on 48 mb !!! Then it would be the first international SW-station from Serbia (Radar is also using frequencies between 1600 - 1800 kHz, but not often because that band is overcrowded in SE Europe)!

Here is a short Youtube-clip of Finnish Old Time Radio's broadcast on the 6th November 2011.

This clip is taken after the moment when 700 Watt linear amplifier broke down giving a bad "exploiting" sound and the station was on the air for some time with reduced 100 Watts. The amp was repaired quickly to be back on air with full power. That moment is on this video. Click the photo.

Next HF-Pirate-Weekend will be Sat-Sun 14-15.1.2012 !! Note the new photo below >

Let's name it name now "Global Pirate HF-Weekend". A test-weekend for pirates from all over the world to broadcast on High Frequencies 10 - 28 MHz (mostly on 15-22 MHz) !!

So, I hope also pirate stations from USA and Canada will join this weekend!!
I think that the stations should prefere 21-22 MHz, which give best skips faraway, but 15 MHz seems to work also (worse below this).

Lets's also hope that all DX-forums around the world will notice this and we will have more listeners around the world, in Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Africa.

Nowdays HF-signals skips easier far away between the continents.

TransAtlantic pirate-QSO - year 1991

Radio Borderhunter from Holland had transatlantic-QSO on Sunday 6th of November 2011 with Undercover Radio from USA. That happened around 21.460 MHz!! Listen it here

I thought that this was the first pirate-QSO between Europe and USA. However, Kai from Norway wrote me that the first ever pirate-QSO happend on 1st of April 1991 on 15.050 MHz. It was made by Liwe Wire Radio from UK who was in QSO-connection with pirate named Commandante John of the Revolutionary Voice of Plainsville (quite long station-name) from USA.
Later, in June 1991, also British Weekend Music Radio had QSO with He Man Radio from USA on 15 MHz.

Radio Black Arrow from Holland confirmed me that he was in QSO with Channel Z (USA) several years ago, on the 4th October 2009 on 15.067 MHz.

(Also Dutch Cupid Radio is rumoured to had a QSO with US-pirate Wolverine Radio on 6.11.2011, but this is not confirmed).

But so far we know today, let's announce that the first pirate-transatlantic-QSO was held in 1991 as written above.

I got again photos from Finnish Old Time Radio. These are from the broadcast-session held on the 5-6.11.2011 - on 19 mb and 48 mb.

Here are the photos of temporary studio and 100 W-transmitter with 700 W amplifier.

Antenna is very special again: 3-element quad, made by Finnish wood products!
It is hanging in the air about 6 m high with wires between the trees.
For the 48 mb the antenna was inverted V-dipole about 20 m high in the trees.
OTR was receiver around the world, forexample in California and Japan and all around Europe.

Summary of the Japan Weekend!

Here a short summary of this HF-test weekend. It was very succesful !!

Despite this was named Japan test-Weekend it was naturally targeted to everybody around the world, too. The name came originally from my Japanese contacts when we made this first time in January 2011.
We originally planned to make this weekend in April but because of disaster in Japan we had to cancel it.

I have had many thanks from all around the world for organizing this weekend, from stations and from listeners. Thank you very much for the positive feedback to everybody!

The fact was that frequencies over 21 MHz was better open than 15 MHz. That was a surprise!

However, there were many receptions in USA and Japan - and even in India and Uzbekistan.
Also nice to have loggings from Ukraine and Russia.

We make this again later! Perhaps around Xmas or New Year. Let's see.

NEW JAPAN-TEST WEEKEND FOR PIRATES ON 10-28 MHz!

The sun has reactivated F2-layer and higher SW-frequencies are now open daily up to 28 MHz from Europe to USA and Asia (and vice-versa).

It is now time to arrange new test day for pirates to reach other continents on SW. Last time in January 2011 it was succesfull.

AFTERNOON 12.00 - 16.00 from Europe to USA

Let's hope this give positive feelings to Japan who has not yet survived from the terrible tsunami. We here in Finland have learned from the media that Japanese ARE extremely persistent and strong people!! Let's hope there is now again many listerners to join this!

But this weekend is for all SW-pirates to reach other continents! I know there are stations also in USA to try to Europe and Japan. Also many stations in Holland, UK and Finland will certainly join this.

I will publish more exact times later (Wintertime-change on 30.10.2011) and also list of the stations (first with XXXX-markings) with times and frequencies.

During the end of the 70's and sometimes in the 80's I was DXing Dutch pirates on 1600 khz - 1670 kHz (+ 227 mb etc.). I heard hundreds of stations and I got also many unique replies (listed here with samples).
Every now and then I got contact from these old pirates when they find my pages.

This week I got contact from Zender 807 from Voorthuizen, Holland. He was broadcasting from 1979 till 1996 on MW. I heard his station on 1986 and I got his reply, too 25 years ago.
Now he found my page and his station named there - and mailed me old photo and sticker-copies. He might be coming to to airwaves and builds soon web www.radio80 7.nl.I scanned Zender 807's letter which I got from him 25 years ago. Click the photo for bigger view to read it.

Old Time Radio from Scandinavia was one of the stations which participated "Japan Test-Weekend" on the 29-30.1.2011.
OTR was not received in Japan, but very well in Georgia, USA on 15.008 MHz. Signal was also good in many parts of Europe.

OTR built experimental longwire-antenna for 19 mb which was 239,5 meters long wire on ice hanged on sticks about 3 m high!! Se the photos below!
This longwire was matched 1/12 wavelegth to 19 mb to 230 degrees direction. It is not the best possible direction towards Japan, but should give back-beam to that direction!
There were similar to North America-direction (310 degrees direction) which reached USA.

New Baro-recording from Japan

Japanese DX-ers with nicknames "Shinzo" and "RadioSiesta" found new recordings of Radio Barones from their Hokkaido-pedition.

This recording is made of clips of Radio Barones receptions on 30.1.2011 between 18.10 - 18.22 UTC in Hokkaido, North Japan (1658 kHz). There are two "Baro"-id's on this clip (about 0.33, 01.33 min): AUDIO 3

Let's hope they find also some other Dutch stations from their Perseus-files!! It is possible because Baro's signal was so clear and quite strong. Baro's transmitter-power is a bit over 2 kW.

Japanese DX-ers used Perseus-receiver. It is SDR-receiver. It is possible to record WHOLE MW-band (2 MHz) to one file to analyze any frequency afterwards. So, it is possible to have more surprises later!

Radio Barones heard in Japan !!!

Today I got mp3-files from Hokkaido-pedition, North Japan (listeners Shinzo and RadioSiesta)! Very interesting!

They heard Radio Barones (near Neede, Holland) in Japan last weekend on 1658 KHz!
There is no ID on the Japanese clips but there is clearly Baro talking in Dutch and thanking for report from Austria (Oostrijk)! (I also recognized his voice immedeately)

- Radio Barones in Hokkaido, Japan on Saturday 30.1.2011 at 17.57 UTC on Medium Wave 1658 kHz: AUDIO 1

- Another clip but weaker signal: AUDIO 2 (17.36 UTC)

Alltough there is no ID on the clips, Radio Barones just mailed me comments, that the clips are clearly his station - and his voice!

Hokkaido-pedition

Japanese DX-listeners "Shinzo" and "RadioSiesta" monitored pirates in Hokkaido (North Japan) during their weekend-pedition (29-30.1.2011).

They heard Scandinavian Baltic Sea Radio with Delta Flag-antenna on Sunday morning, 29.1.2011 (+ also 30.1) on 14.350 MHz. AUDIO

They also heard some MW-pirates (but I will have their clips later to listen).
There is a big challence to hear MW-pirate from Holland between 1620-1680 kHz!!
(It is possible! In Finnish Lappland DXers have heard dozens of Japanese maritime traffic (Sea) stations with only 50 Watts of power on 1669 kHz!).

12265 - Space shuttle 0812 with lively music (tango? Waltz? ) Max signal S2 but most time under the local DSL QRN.

15068.4 - F R Nova on 0706 has been heard with old songs and signal S2.
Better on 0822 with signal 15342.

12264.7 - Space Shuttle on was audible after 0838 with S2 level max S3
1-2/5332. Heard a rock song.

15008.9 - Old Time Radio on was very poor on 08xx though several times
could be heard marginally.

15052 - R Scotland on 15052 found on 0757 with a carrier of S3-4 . ON 0802 was airing the song 'call me' of Blondie , then OM with talks calling Japan then with old song "I wonder'. S4 max 25434. The station with the strongest signal.

14350 USB - Baltic Sea Radio on U on 0818 with ID email and talks S0 15332. Best signal using the 16 m horizontal antenna.

15074.9 - Cupid Radio. Duno if he was transmitting for the occasion but he
was quite well audible audible as with the previous tuimes I logged him. He supposedly started on 0900 but i tuned in, on 0912 with ID and old song, and signal level S3 max.

Listener was "Tanukiou" in Kumamoto, South Japan with Sony AN-12 active antenna !

Not good conditions on Sunday

Sunday 30.1.2011 gave us poor conditions on higher frequencies, but of course not much expected at this time of the year.

NEXT TIME HF-TEST DAY TO JAPAN in April/May!
Japanese are very keen on to hear European pirates because it is real DX-ing (real Distant X-stations)!! We also try to make real-time chatting with them.

Some random HF-results listed:

- Baltic Sea Radio was propably heard again in Japan on Sunday 14.350 MHz USB.

- Radio Spaceshuttle was heard in Europe well.

- Old Time Radio had better Saturday (in USA!) than Sunday.

- Channel Z Radio from USA was well audible in USA and Canada on Saturday evening on 11.428 MHz but no sign in Europe or Japan.

- Radio Waves from France had clear signal in Finland on 11.401 MHz around 09.05 UTC

- Japanese heard weak music-audio on 15.052 MHz (Radio Scotland-frq.). We wait for possible recordings.

- Ukraine: Radio Scotland (Holland), Old Time Radio (Scandinavia, 15.008 MHz) and Radio Nova AM (Holland, 15.050 MHz) was heard in Ukraine with good signals! WEB-LINK

- Free Radio Nova (Holland) was also received in Finland with moderate signal on 15.050 MHz

- Cupid Radio from Holland had big signal in Finland (with deep fading) on 15.075 MHz. Cupid Radio was not listed on the schedule.

European SW-pirates might never been received in Japan, so far I know. Or at least it is very very rare!

I am arranging test weekend for European pirates to try to reach Japan on Short Wave!

Japanese DXers with nicknames "Shinzo" and "RadioSiesta" will have DX-pedition in Hokkaido, North Japan.

It will be from Saturday morning 29th January till Sunday evening 30th January.

They will monitor given HF-frequencies on the following times:

Note: CHANGED EVENING-TIMES and frequencies!

Pirate stations which I received on FM last summer !

During summer time I monitor FM-band very intensively! It is possible to hear radio stations from 1000 - 3500 km distance on FM-band 87.5 -108 MHz via ionosphere (photo beside)!

Last sumer there were excellent conditions on FM to Europe. I identified hundreds of stations from all around (My distance-record last summer was Radio Darom from Beerseba, Israel on 95.8 MHz, 5 kW, 3380 km. I have QSL).

However, I heard also a few pirate stations on FM via ionosphere - from London, Holland and Serbia.

I tuned this Dutch pirate only about 1,5 minutes time on 87.5 with nonstop music, but I was in contact with this pirate and they confirmed my clip (you can hear vinyl-record slow-starting sound in my clip). They sent a few photos of their equipment, too. Power 2 kW + antenna gain to 4-element yagi.

Serbian pirate Radio YU1 heard in Japan !!

Last week I got interesting e-mail from Hokkaido, Japan from Mr. Ushio Shimpei. There was a sample clip of unknown station heard on 1723 kHz.
It was a sample of Radio YU1, Serbia, which was easy to recognize because his voice has a bit special sound. Also there were many times station-name YU1 mentioned, clear IDs!!

Very nice catch in Japan! Radio YU1 is located near Belgrade and he uses 5 kW transmitter. Here are the photos of YU1's equipment (taken by Radio Texas, Serbia).

Serbian internet-page for tubes!! 25 000 tubes!!

I just got a message from Serbia of a web-page for tubes: www.tubes.rs.

The owner of this page is ex-pirate called Radio Columbia from Pancevo, near Belgrade. He was active pirate for many years on MW in the beginning of 90's.

He has been collecting vacuum tubes for 25 years and he owns today about 25 000 tubes (!), some of them unused!! In his page there are many photos and also old schemas of tube-transmitters for FM. Very nice page - and collection!
Perhaps he is also selling tubes, if you are interested (There is his e-mail).

Glowing tubes are very beautiful !! There is no doubt of that! It was fantastic view when I visited Greek pirate station in Larissa-city 3 years ago.

Radio Elektron-video, Kucevo, Serbia

On May 2008 I visited many Serbian pirate radios in the countryside: like Radio Vihor from Pancevo (near Belgrade), Radio Novi Studio from Smederevo and Radio Elektron from Kucevo (in very beautiful mountain countryside, 100 km SE from Belgrade).

Here is video of Radio Elektron having QSO in the afternoon of 23rd May 2008. Transmitter is 2 x EL519, 50 Watts. Home-made equipment.
In this video operator have QSO with Mig Radija (about 50 km West of Belgrade).
I think Elektron has now new transmitter with more power.

Spider Radio, Athens, Greece

Spider Radio from Athens, Greece is active again on 6925 kHz. This station is broadcasting almost daily from 19-21 UTC.
The power is about 70 Watts in USB-modulation. (Sometimes also AM-mod. 30-40 W).

Signal has been very good in Finland around 20utc, even with AM-modulation. Spider closes transmissions always with title "Il silencio" at 20.57 utc.

Radio Viktor and Radio Novi Probni from Serbia

I got new photos from Serbian Medium Wave pirate stations.
Radio Novi Probni is from Despotovac from Central Serbia. This station's power today is around 200 watts but on these photos you can see elder 50 W transmitter. The frequency area is 1650 - 1780 kHz.The most interesting in Novi Probni-transmitter is that it is based on mosfet-transistors. I know only one other station which uses transistor-AM-tx. It is Power Energy from Dublin (which I have seen in operation 2y ago). All equipment is self built, even SWR-meter and receiver!!!
I have once tried to hear Novi Probni but no luck with conditions.
The other Serbian is Radio Viktor from Smederevska Palanka, about 30 km South from Belgrade.
I have these photos directly from the station.
I have heard this station once shortly when Radio Barones from Holland had QSO with Serbians around 1700 kHz (Mp3-clip). That happened two years ago on 19.1.2008, late evening on 1702 kHz .
Later I got more information about the transmitter: Power is 500 Watts with 3 x GK71-tubes with 1500 V anode Voltage. Antenna is 76 m about 12 m high (1,5mm wire). (So, the comment from UU1CC below, under these photos, was perfectly right! Great knowledge!)

I have also contact from 3rd new Serbian MW-pirate. That station is Radio Sony near Kragujevac, Central Serbia. He is interested in to test signal to Finland when new tx is ready.

Russian pirate-history in internet

Finally we have some information of Russian pirates in internet in English. Ivanov The Valetinas (RX1AG) from St Petersburg writes Russian pirate and radioamateur history:

Unfortunately I have not had time to read those pages carefully yet.

There are a lot of pirates in Russia. Those stations operate mainly around 3000 kHz but also around 1700 kHz.
I suppose these Russian unlicensed stations operate mostly like radioamateurs and they do not play music so often. However, I have heard many Russian pirates playing music above 1600 kHz.
I have heard Radio Galavok very often there. No idea of exact location. Perhaps from St Petersburg area because os strong signal?

Zender Zanussie from Holland on 1512 kHz

During Christmas time I have some more time for pirate DX-ing.

On this Sunday 27.12.2009 I heard Dutch pirate on unusual frequency, on 1512 kHz. The station was Zender Zanussie from Overijssel-province, near Kampen in Holland!

The most surprising thing was that this station was audible for the whole day!! Usually MW-signals fade away for midday-hours when the sun is shining.
Also my antenna is not the best possible for this kind of reception. I used 48 mb SW-dipole.

I contacted my friend, Zender Blauwe Piraat, in Holland and he sent my clip to this station during the broadcast - so I got greetings live on the air from Zanussie, which I luckily also heard myself!

Female-pirate-QSL after 33 years of listening!!

When I was school-boy during 70's I tuned and reported hundreds of pirate stations on SW and MW. I sent letters especially to Dutch MW-pirates and got many nice replies (listed here).

A few weeks ago I had interesting e-mail-contact from Zender Ricardo from Oude Pekela, NE Holland. He is ex-pirate operator from the 70's. He has built own web-page of many pirates from that time and he also found my page of Dutch stations! Ricardo's nice and rare photos can be found here (many lady-pirate-photos!).

One very interesting point is that he recognized one of my old recordings (1976) from my page. .
He identified this to be female pirate Zendster Mira, also from Oude Pekela (my recording 1976)!!!

Zendster Mira was broadcasting weekly music programmes for 5 years during late 70's on around 1620 kHz, MW (Transmitter: 3x VT4C, modulator 2 x EL519, out about 300 Watts)!

It was also nice surprise that this lady is alive and kicking very well !!

So, after 33 years of my listening I got QSL-card from this lady-pirate! Zender Ricardo invited her to his home. She listened her voice from my internet page - and wrote me QSL - after 33 years of listening !! I got it posted in letter)!

This is absolutely the most special QSL I have ever had in my DX-career!! (I have more than 1700 QSL's).

Serbian pirates tested - no signals in Finland

New Serbian pirates tested signal to Finland on late Saturday evening 19.9 at 20. 00 utc = 22.00 hours Central European Time! The tests lasted about 15-20 minutes around 1690 and 1700 kHz...

These stations were Radio Fenix and Radio Novi Probni, both have powers about 100 - 200 watts .
However, no signals in Finland that evening!

There might be a problem with my antenna. I have to check - or there were no conds.

Radio Fenix, Arandjelovac, Serbia

Here more exotic photos of Serbian pirate stations! This is Radio Fenix, located in Arandjelovac, about 50-60 km south from Belgrade, Serbia.
The transmitter gives about 200 Watts with 8 x PL504. Fenix is also on the air on 27 MHz with 50 Watts.

First US-pirate-QSL: Radio Jamba !

Yestreday I got my first pirate-radio-QSL from USA! I heard this station over one year ago, and I sent an e-mai,l but it never reached the operators!
Now the station operator found mp3 from my blog and confirmed it to be Radio Jamba International (blog).
This broadcast which I heard in May 2008 was mobile from Missouri with 80 Watts USB on 6925 kHz. Signal was weak here in Finland but it was recognizable!

Radio Jamba is on air for alternative radio programming and it is part of Area 51-group broadcasting on legal SW-station WBCQ on 5110 kHz. Jamba has own weekly show on this station.

It is very hard listening trying to catch US-pirates. The reason for that is time for reception. Here in Finland it is mostly possible between 02-05 at night our local time - also the time for deepest sleep.
It is possible to reach the whole world on this frequency/power, if there is s chance to have long broadcasting times. Spider Radio from Athens, Greece is a good example. This station has been heard all over the world on this channel in USB, including New Zealand, Japan, USA... Very often good signal here in Finland!

Old Time Radio QSL and video

On Friday 17th of April 2009 I got mail from Finnish pirate station Old Time Radio!
They asked me to inform European pirate-listeners of their high-power broadcast on three bands on the coming weekend!!

This session was very unique on pirate-radio scene because they did broadcast on three bands during the weekend 18-19.4.2009 (First time ever in pirate-history?):
On 19 mb (15065 kHz, 200 W), 48 mb (6270 kHz, 1 kW) and even on MW 1670 kHz (500 W)! I was told that they used the same transmitter all the time!

Signal was very strong here in Naantali on MW but skipped mostly over on 48 mb and was silent on 19 mb.
19 mb-broadcast was heard in Athens, Greece. 48 mb broadcast was so strong in Europe that the listeners there were sure that it was relayed by some Dutch-station!!! 1670 kHz was not received in UK or Holland (because of local interference?) but in Germany it was weakly on.

Radio YU1, Belgrade, Serbia

I just got new photos from Serbia.
The station is Radio YU1 (="Ju jedan") from Belgrade area.
I think this is the biggest pirate in Serbia with about 5 kW of power. Here you can see the self-built transmitter with huge tubes. I hope I will get more detailed information of the tubes later.

I have heard this station a few times here in Finland around 1700 kHz with huge signal. I visited Serbia in May 2008 but I had no connection this station.

QSL from Radio Snowball, Russia!

Last week I got a letter from Stavropol-city. There was my first Russian pirate-QSL ever!!

This station is Radio Snowball, Russia which confirmed my reception with printed QSL-card. It is very special QSL also because the distance is quite long (near Black Sea)!

Radio Snowball had special tests to Europe in February on 6630 kHz USB. The test was organized by me and it was very interesting happening as many pirate listeners in Europe heard this station!! Real rarity!

This station was heard in Finland on 31.1.2009 on this same channel.

Radio Snegovik (Snowball), Stavropol, Russia!

After few weeks I did some DX-ing this weekend.
I had e-mail contact from far away SW Russia, from Stavropol. The operator of Radio Snegovik (=Snowball) found my pages and wanted to test signal to Finland. Stavropol is about 200 km north from Georgian border close to Black Sea. Click the map >>>

On 31.1. Saturday evening at 20.15 utc I was surprised to hear weak USB signal on 6630 kHz with Russian music and station announcements: "This is radio station Snowball, Snowball, Snowball...." (mp3-clip).
The operator promised to mail QSL of this reception.
Radio Snowball is also interested in to make international broadcast later with many hours programme around 6630 kHz. I will inform you all via Dr. Tim post if this will happen!!

Radio Texas from Serbia to Finland with 80 W!

Last May 2008 I visited many Serbian pirates in the beautiful Serbian countryside. I met also Radio Texas (from Vrsac, East Serbia) which I had heard before in Finland with only 50 W (on 1700 kHz).

On Tuesday evening 30.12.2008 Radio Texas tested new PLL-transmitter with 80 Watts output (playing blues music). Signal was surprisingly good in Finland for some moments on 1694 kHz (21.25 utc). Listen mp3!
Perhaps we can arrange again international broadcast from Serbia to Europe this winter? I am sure many pirate DX-ers would like to have QSL from Serbian pirate station! Let's see. Click the photos >

At night 26-27. Dec 2008 I tuned Greek pirates at late night above 1600 kHz. Radio Anatolia from Kilkis was very strong all the time on 1630 kHz + some UNIDs. Later I heard pirate-QSO between Greeks and Serbian station around 1690 kHz.

Saturday evening, 20.12.2008, since long time I tuned Dutch pirates on 186 mb. Radio Marskramer from Holland was supposed to test but had to cancel the broadcast.
I checked my L-antenna, 250m directed to South. It is giving a bit interference, but I had some good signals from Holland and Greece.

Radio Casanova, Holland - 48 mb - 3.5 kW!

Some years ago I heard Radio Casanova
from Holland on 48 mb with very good signal (listen clip - 7.3.2005 on 6305 kHz). The station operator just mailed me photos of his new good looking equipment. Output of this new tx is even 3.5 kW !! Wow. Can't wait to hear the first tests with that....

New FM-stations to Turku

I have been very busy at work after summer and therefore no time for DXing:

I just opened two new FM-stations to Turku-city. They are Radio Melodia (www)(89.0 + 88.5, 91.8) and Zoom FM (www)(93.4 MHz - 50 W).
Provincial Radio Melodia is playing Finnish music and oldies for 35+ and Zoom FM is a small pop/rock-station in Turku-city for 15-30 years old listeners. Our 3rd station Radio Auran Aallot (90.5 MHz) will be more AOR/pop soon.

Now I have some time for DXing after big rush of music scheduling and jingle building etc.

All who sent reception report of Radio Vihor's international broadcasts in May have now received their Special-QSL-cards by post!!
They have been posted from Serbia with operator's signature.

Radio Vihor will be on the air internationally again on September or October when AM-season begins again after summer. Then everybody has a new change to get pirate-QSL from Serbia.

Unfortunately I am very buzy at work, so I have not had time to put my pirate-photos online - but I will do it sooner or later!

Another Serbian MW-pirate Radio Texas (from Vrsac, East Serbia) has built new PLL-transmitter with 120 W output for MW (around 1700 kHz).

Looks very professional, clean and cool! The station plans to put 1 kW on air later this year by using this tx as a driver!
Radio Texas will also test internationally during this autumn. I will inform about the broadcasts later in the forums!

Radio Vihor QSL's on the way

On the 18.5.2008 we had broadcast from Serbian AM-pirate station on 1680 kHz (and lower frq's). It was from Radio Vihor's site from Pancevo which we visited to be on the air. It was the first real international broadcast from Serbia with contact address (Radio Bluestar's P.O.Box in Zwolle - thanks for Bluestar!!!).
We had 12 reports from these countries: Finland, Latvia, Czech, Austria, Germany, Belgium and Holland.
The AM-conditions on 18.5.2008 was very poor. The noise from the thurderstrom were very bad and strong. It covered audio-signals constantly and badly - everybody reported this same info. Also there were unluckily Dutch stations on the frequencies where we informed to be on the air (Dutches are rarely on 1660 kHz or over). New broadcast made on 31.5.2008 (no larger info made this time).

I just made and mailed Radio Vihor QSL's to Serbia. The operator will sign the cards and mail them further to DX-ers. The card is color-photo-QSL where the operator is adjusting the transmitter.
I think we will have a new international broadcast in September or October - so there will be a new chance to hear and have QSL from Serbian pirate!
I will publish photos and videos here later as we visited 4 AM-pirates during Serbian Tour in May.
Just now I am very buzy at work because I am building up new (legal) FM-station to Turku - and re-formatting two other.

FM-DX-listening in Utö-island 7-14.6.2008

I was listening FM in Utö for one week with my friends, 7-14.6.2008.

Utö is a little island, 1,5 km x 1 km-size about 100 km south from Turku-city in SW Finland. It is the farest lived island in Finland with 50 inhabitants!

We heard dozens of FM-stations around Baltic Sea area + some Italians via Sporadic E. No pirate listening there.

Serbian stations on air 31.5.2008 at 20.00utc

I have been very buzy after holidays so there are no time for editing photos from our Serbian trip.
We visited 17 FM-stations (for QSL) and 4 MW-pirate stations. There are a lot of pictures to edit later when having time!

The visited pirates were: Radio Vihor (Pancevo), Radio Lovac (Pancevo), Novi Studio (Smederevo) and Radio Elektron (Kucevo). All homemade transmitters - even homemade receivers!

LATE SATURDAY EVENING 31.5.2008
Late Saturday evening Radio Vihor from Pancevo was on the air for one hour playing Finnish music from my premade C-casette (with Zwolle-address).
This broadcast was heard by many DXers in Finland! Also Radio Texas was heard after Vihor.

Hello from Belgrade, Serbia!

We were on the air from Pancevo on Sunday evening! Great experience - all self-made equipment in nice a house in beautiful countryside!The broadcast was received in Finland and in Holland with weak signal but it was not great succes! We had to change the frequency to 1680 kHz!! There were Dutch station on 1660 khz and strong Greeks on 1650 and 1670 kHz!! Bad luck!
Conditions were very bad! There were thunderstorm crashes all the time. We heard Radio Barones from Holland in QSO back but with strong interference!
I will add some photos here after the trip. Thanks all for trying!

I will be in Serbia, in Belgrade, between 18th - 26th of May with my friend Jim (from Espoo, Finland). We will visit many legal FM-stations during the week in countryside around Belgrade.

We will also be on the air on Radio Vihor (from Pancevo, 25 km NE from Belgrade) on Sunday evening. We will have one hour broadcast with Serbian pirate-guys and will play Serbian and Finnish music.
The broadcast will be on Sunday 18.5.2008 on 1650, 1660 or 1670 kHz with 1 kW. We start at 22.00 Central European Time (20.00 UTC) and close at 23.00 CET. I hope some frequency will be free. We will take prepaid GSM for callings and SMS to live transmission.
All reports of this special broadcast can be sent to Radio Vihor, P.O.Box 1104, 8001BC Zwolle, Holland (This P.O.Box belongs to RadioBluebird who has been in QSO with Serbians before). Please enclose one IRC for Special-QSL. There will be no e-mail-box!

UNID pirate from USA on 6925 kHz

Last night I was awake late night and first time I heard weak US-pirate station on 6925 KHz!!
Signal was USB and very weak, but luckily I got identification; "This is Radio ......"
The station was audible from 23.13 till 23.33 UTC (possibly closed down). Played "Ghost Riders in the sky".
Here is a short clip of this very weak ID (9th May 2008 at 23.29utc).
I found loggings from USA (www.frn.net) that this is Radio Jamba International but I can not fit this name to my recording! Any ideas for contact-address?

Here a few Greek pirate-loggings from the past week. Some music-pirates were on the air above 1620 kHz . They gave GSM-numbers for SMS and and I phoned them. (Unfortunately I have quite bad local background-noise on MW just now).

1625 kHz - Radio Nikolas Dynamitis, Tyrnavos (10 km NW of Larissa), Greece giving SMS-number (6972734489). I phoned to this number shortly and sent sms - and I have message back!! I made some updates to my mainpage www.harrikujala.tk. There are photo-series of transmitters of Radio 98 and Radio Xenos (both from Volos, Greece) and Radio Balkan, Beograd, Serbia.
On SW strongest of the day was Orion Radio and Radio Lowland. Not so many stations on the air.
Playback was very strong on 6882 kHz but Spider (Greece) and Barretina (Spain) were weak.

Chris Cary 1946 - 2008

One legendary pirate radio personality for me has been Chris Cary. He died in Tenerife on 29.2.2008, still working on some radio projects.
First time I met his name in 1980-81 on Dublin-based pirate Radio Nova, the greatest land-based pirate ever been!! I remember very well when I accidentally found their big AM-signal here in Finland on 843 kHz (50 kW) on November 1981 ! Later I heard Nova also on FM 88.1 MHz (mp3-clip).
I followed happenings around Radio Nova very closely at those times. I have dozens of newsaper-cuttings of Nova-raids, closures, demonstrations, jammings etc. - also from Radio Sunshine, Dublin which Chris was building up with Robbie Dale.
Later I realized Chris was also involved with Radio Luxembough and offshore pirates, Radio Caroline and Radio Northsea.
The most interesting part of this is Chris' legal, local radio, Buzz FM, Birmigham 102.4 MHz in the beginning of 90's.
I heard his small FM-station here in Finland on FM on summer 1993. I sent a report to Buzz but I never got a reply. Ten years later, year 2003, I managed to find out Chris' e-mail and I sent him my mp3-clip. He kindly confirmed my recording.
Buzz FM was not long lived because they were granted only 50 Watts power, but Chris stated me that when I heard his station before the closure, the power was closer to 1 kW. So, no wonder of the nice signal here. Here is my nice sounding clip of Buzz FM received at my home on 102.4 MHz (e-skip via ionosphare, summer 1993)!
Any ideas who is the DJ??

So, I just realized I have QSL from all stations where Chris was involved: Luxy, Caroline, Northsea, Nova, Sunshine and Buzz FM (despite his latest satellite- or LW-projects)!!

Radio PlayBack International

I have a kind and quick reply from new quality-station Radio PlayBack International.
Really interesting venture on SW. They enclosed QSL and very detailed history of radio broadcasting starting from Einstein and Marconi and ending to PlayBack.
In the reply they stated that the station in not located in Italy (We must remember that it is a pirate station - and we are not supposed to know their closer location. So, it is broadcasting from the "island of nowhere", as stated in their jingle).
They promised photos of the equipment and I will publish them here right away!! Very interesting.

Many stations on the air this Sunday and also quite clear conditions. Strongest of the day were Radio Scotland, Mazda, Voice of The Netherlands and Paardenkracht - and of course Playback in the late evenings.
Radio Viking Scandinavia (Swedish?) was a nice surprise with USB-broadcast on 6305 kHz.

5815 kHz - Orion Radio Netherlands (www). Good signal. Bad noise on 5818 kHz - 09.30- (O=2-4)
6250 kHz - Radio Queen (tent.). Some signal peak-ups but no talk heard - 09.35- (O=0-2)

I am going to Serbia, 17.-25.5.2008

I am going to Serbia in May 17-26th, just before and during Eurovision Song Contest in Beograd.
I will visit many local legal FM-stations (at least 10 stations) in Beograd and in smaller cities around with my DX-friend (Jim from Espoo), so, the target will be radio 24h, FM- and pirate-radio.

We hope that we can be on the air on some bigger MW-pirate radio from Serbia on some late evening. It could be interesting to try to reach Europe from Serbian pirate between 1600 - 1700 kHz!
I will inform here about the possible broadcast from Serbia. It would be fantastic to take GSM-phone-callings and reports from all over Europe during the brodcast !
The happenings in Serbia does not look good just now. I hope everything will go better - we have already booked the flights!!

They are Radio Xenos and Radio 98 from Volos, Central Greece - both around 1720 kHz and approx. 1 kW power.

Weekend 16.-17.2.2008 - Russian pirates!

One highlight of this weekend was a few Russian pirates received on Medium Wave 1640 - 1700 kHz. Also I identified one, Radio Palma, location unknown (confirmed by Russian DXer).

I have noticed before that these stations are audible almost only between 15.00 - 18.00 UTC and always there are many stations up at the same time!!! After 18UTC they start to fade out - and very rarely audible at night. I think the reason for this is the sunset efect. So, it is possible that they come far away from Russia. Russian help needed for more info!!

Radio 98 from Volos, Middle Greece had clear signal in Finland on Thursday evening 14.2. -08 from 20.50 to 21.00 UTC. I heard Greek folk music and talking in English:
"This is Station 98 from Volos, Central Greece. Operator name is Panos" mp3_A / mp3_B / mp3_C
The frequency was 1720 kHz and power of the transmitter was 1 kW.

Radio 98 is my 3rd received pirate from Volos-city.
Last Saturday I received two other stations on 1720 kHz. They were Radio Xenos (temporarily 1,2 kW / mp3) and Radio Pilio (1 kW, 6x 813-tube, 3000 V / mp3).
Xenos and Radio 98 are now QSLed and I will put them online soon.

Radio Xenos and Radio 98 from Volos, Greece test to Finland!

Radio 98 (eneninda okto) from Volos, Greece tested signal to Finland Saturday evening at 19.00 UTC with 1 kW. Frequency was 1750 kHz and later 1720 kHz.
However, it was too early time and the band was not well open - no clear signal here. New test later.

Radio Xenos
received in Finland!!
Radio Xenos from this same city tested at 20.00-20.14 UTC on 1720 kHz. Power was 1,2 kW (max. available 3,5 kW). His signal was poor/fair here in Finland! I heard Greek talking and music - and station-ID in English: mp3_A / mp3_B "This is Radio Xenos from Volos, Greece"
The signal-path here - 2.342 km long (made by Radio Tromokratis. Tnx!)!

After Radio Xenos I heard Radio Pilio (also from Volos) giving signal-report to Xenos. This happened on 1720 kHz at 20.15 UTC. Power also 1 kW. Signal poor/fair. There is clearly "Radio Pilio" said three times (but impossible to ID without Greek help) ! mp3

Volos is a beautiful city by the sea about 160 km North from Athens (60 km South from Larissa).
